Kwantis designed and developed a centralized while-drilling data hub that integrates data from multiple rigs and formats, automatically validates and standardizes it, and securely distributes it to downstream applications. The solution streamlines data integration, improves data quality and traceability, and enables reliable, scalable access to real-time drilling information.
The Challenge
For a global energy operator running drilling programs across multiple countries and rig contractors, while-drilling data arrives in a patchwork of formats and protocols. Mudlogging, directional drilling (MWD/LWD), and other rig-based systems each speak their own dialect — different WITSML versions, LAS files, or proprietary formats — and that same data needs to reach a wide range of downstream applications used by engineers and analysts at headquarters. Without a common layer in between, every rig-to-application connection becomes its own integration problem: mismatched mnemonics, inconsistent units of measurement, missing well and wellbore metadata, and no reliable way to verify that incoming files were even structurally valid before they were put to use. The organization needed one platform that could sit between the field and the enterprise — ingesting anything the rigs produced and republishing it in a single, trustworthy format that any client application could consume.
The Solution
Kwantis designed and built a while-drilling data hub that ingests, validates, standardizes, and distributes real-time drilling data at scale. The platform supports WITSML 1.3, 1.4, and 2.0, plus time- and depth-based LAS files. All inputs are converted into a common format, enriched with well metadata, standardized mnemonics, and normalized units. A rule-based engine validates LAS files for required headers, data ranges, null values, curve declarations, units, and sampling intervals. Clear error messages help contractors resolve issues, while invalid and raw files are retained for review and traceability. Validated data is stored in a structured database, alongside an unstructured repository for raw files, invalid uploads, and documents. Users can compare log versions, select the authoritative upload, and generate custom LAS extracts. Data can be published through the platform’s WITSML server and distributed to downstream monitoring and analytics systems. Role-based permissions, restricted-well controls, and secure time-limited tokens protect access to files and real-time data.
The Outcome
By replacing a fragmented set of point-to-point integrations with one governed data hub, the platform was designed to deliver:- One ingestion path for every format, removing the need for custom handling of each rig’s native output- Verifiable data quality, through automated LAS validation with specific, actionable error reporting rather than silent failures- Faster, safer distribution, with structured data available to any client application through a standard WITSML server, plus purpose-built pipelines to specific downstream tools- Fine-grained control over sensitive data, through role-based access and a dedicated tight-well mechanism for restricted assets- Full traceability, with structured and unstructured stores, version comparison, and an activity log covering every publication event
Why It Matters
Real-time drilling decisions depend on data that is both fast and trustworthy. By standardizing ingestion, automating validation, and centralizing distribution, this solution turns a tangle of rig-specific formats and one-off integrations into a single, governed pipeline — giving engineering teams confidence in the data they’re using, and giving the organization a scalable foundation as new rigs, formats, and applications are added over time.
